Frequently Asked Questions
-
Regulation involves adjusting all of the mechanical parts of lever and pedal harps to ensure proper functionality.
-
It is best to have your harp regulated annually. Because the structure of a harp is under constant tension, regulation is needed even if your harp is not being played.
However, depending on the type of harp you have, how much you play, the age of your harp, and how often you move it, regulation can be done every other year.
-
Think of regulation like an oil change for your car - it helps to ensure that your harp will continue to function well for many years. Having a technician regulate your harp regularly also provides an opportunity to monitor any structural changes or issues over time, which is especially helpful for older harps.
-
Be sure to replace the top two octaves of strings on your harp, as well as any strings that are frayed, visibly worn, or more than 2-3 years old. Strings most often wear at points of contact with the harp, especially where the levers or discs touch the strings.
For pedal harps, bass wires should be replaced every 1-3 years.
A technician can replace strings or completely restring your harp for you, but may need additional time to bring the strings up to pitch.
